About the Artist
Barbara Umbel is an artist and metalsmith living in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida.
Her jewelry is deeply influenced by her natural surroundings. She combs the beach for shells and stones to incorporate into her designs, often collecting from the coquina rock reef that lines the shore and provides a wealth of materials and inspiration year-round.
Fascinated by the color, texture, and form of the shells she finds, Barbara uses them as a starting point for her drawings, which often take on the appearance of sea creatures—mythical beings you can’t quite identify, yet reminiscent of octopus, jellyfish, and other mysterious creatures of the deep.
