About Space Coast Art Festival
The Space Coast Art Festival (SCAF) has been a cherished tradition in the Space Coast community for over six decades. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we are dedicated to celebrating the transformative power of fine arts. Each year, we proudly host a juried fine arts exhibition and a student art show, bringing artists, students, and families together to connect, inspire, and create.
Our success is made possible by the tireless efforts of our all-volunteer Board, the support of Festival Sponsors and Community Partners, and an incredible network of volunteers. Together, they help uphold SCAF’s legacy of artistic excellence and community connection.
Our History
For more than 60 years, the Space Coast Art Festival has evolved from a modest sidewalk art show into one of the region’s most anticipated cultural events. Below are some key milestones in our journey:
- 1963: A group of local artists and community leaders, with sponsorship from the City of Cocoa Beach, launched the Cocoa Beach Sidewalk Art Show, planting the seeds for what would later become SCAF.
- 1966: The event joined forces with the October Fair, organized by Kit and Charles Oldag, expanding its reach and offerings.
- 1968: Leadership of the festival transitioned to the Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club, led by President Mary Catherine Jones, while city sponsorship continued to provide support.
- 1972: The festival officially incorporated as Space Coast Art Festival, Inc., and moved to Thanksgiving weekend to align with the holiday season. The festival’s logo was designed by Dick Hansen, and Ann Brush was named the first President of the Corporate Board.
- 1985: A jurying process was introduced for artist selection, bringing esteemed judges from top artistic institutions to enhance the quality of the festival.
- 1988: The festival published its first Artist Directory and Program with the support of Florida Today, helping promote the participating artists and events.
- 1989: A Performing Arts segment was added, enriching the festival’s offerings and creating a dynamic cultural experience.
- 1996: SCAF achieved 501(c)(3) non-profit status, cementing its commitment to fostering fine arts in the community.
- 1998: The festival established a year-round headquarters in downtown Cocoa Beach, marking an exciting new chapter of growth.
- 2014: Seeking a larger venue, the festival relocated to Port Canaveral, centering its activities around the base of the iconic Exploration Tower.
- 2017: SCAF moved again to Manatee Park in Cape Canaveral.
- 2018: To better serve artists and attendees, the festival shifted its dates from Thanksgiving weekend to October.
- 2021: The festival found a new home at The Avenue Viera®, where it continues to thrive and inspire creativity today.
